Stage by stage

From the first weeks of pregnancy to the months after

Each stage brings different aches and different questions. Tell us where you are, and we plan the visit around it.

  • The first trimester

Tiredness, queasiness and a head full of questions. Visits are short and gentle, and we ask about your doctor or midwife first.

  • The second trimester

Low back and hip aches, sleep that is harder to find and a body that changes week by week. You lie on your side with pillows.

  • The third trimester

Heavy legs, a tired back and short nights. Visits are slow and unhurried, and you set the position and the pace.

  • The first weeks after birth

Rest, soreness, feeding and sleep in pieces. Bring your baby: we see you in a recliner while they sleep or feed.

  • Two to six months

Sore shoulders and wrists from carrying and feeding, and tiredness that stays. Visits can fit around a nap.

  • Later on

Going back to work and to exercise while your body still feels different. Come when it suits you, and tell us how you feel.

The room

A quiet room and a plan you choose

Visits begin with a conversation, and you can change position or stop at any point.

The room has a padded table, bolsters for lying on your side and under your knees, and a recliner for the weeks when lying flat is uncomfortable.

What we set up

  • Pillows and bolsters for every stage

  • Room for a stroller and a baby seat

  • A partner or a friend can stay with you

Questions people ask first

Can I have acupuncture while I am pregnant?

Many people do. Your acupuncturist explains the risks before the first needle: soreness, light bruising, feeling light-headed and, rarely, bleeding or infection. Some points are avoided in pregnancy. Tell us how far along you are, and tell your doctor or midwife that you are coming.

Does it hurt?

Most people feel a quick pinch, a dull ache or a warm, heavy feeling, and some feel nothing at the point. The needles are much thinner than the ones used for shots. If anything is too much, say so and we adjust or stop. Ear seeds use no needles at all.

Can I bring my baby?

Yes. Postpartum visits are made for it. Feed, change or hold your baby whenever you need to, and we will plan the visit around naps.

What do you do alongside my doctor or midwife?

We take care of the visit with us and leave your prenatal and postpartum care to your own provider. We ask who you see, and with your permission we can send a short note. Questions about your pregnancy or your recovery go to them.

Will I have to stop my medicine?

No. Keep taking everything your prescriber gave you, and tell us all that you take. Acupuncture works alongside your doctor's care, never in place of it.

How much does a visit cost?

How fees work explains what sets the fee, what a first visit includes and how we give you a written estimate before you come. Ask us when you book.
